Our Recommended Worming Programme

Download as pdf file Adobe pdf reader

The following is a simple programme based on information regarding the modern wormers. The programme gives a cycle of exactly 52 weeks and may be repeated annually. This is an updated version of our previously recommended yearly worming programme as a result of recent reports of moxidectin resistance to round worms and bots. However moxidectin is still the most efficient wormer against small red worms (cyathostomes). Moxidectin has been shown to be very effective against the larval stages of these worms.

‘Equest PRAMOX’ provides a convenient way of controlling tapeworms and redworms in one gel preparation. This wormer contains a drug (praziquantel) that is effective against all three types of tapeworm that infest horses as well as containing another drug (moxidectin) which is effective against redworms.  This means that in spring and autumn both types of worms can be targeted with just one wormer.

We strongly recommend regular collection of dung, dosing and isolating new arrivals for 48 hours, harrowing of pastures and cross grazing (e.g. cattle/sheep) if possible. Worm egg counts on a small sample of dung can be performed for a small cost at our own laboratory and can provide information on the effectiveness of your worming regime. This is particularly important for larger numbers of horses grazing the same pasture. Discount rates are available for more than 5 samples. There is also now a very accurate test available for diagnosing tapeworm infestation from a blood sample.

Our currently recommended standard worming programme is outlined below:

01 June
01 August
01 October
01 December

Equest Pramox Equest Pramox contains Moxidectin and Praziquantel

ExodusExodus contains Pyrantel

Maximec Maximec contains Ivermectin

We also have another worming regime that is environmentally friendly and does not rely on such extensive use of chemical wormers. This ‘green’ system is only useful for ‘closed’ horse populations where the management system is strict and well controlled. Please follow link to Targeted worm control’.
